Frequently Asked Questions

Some of the questions we are commonly asked at O2 Plus Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy

How does Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy work?

When we breathe air at normal atmospheric pressure, oxygen is transferred by the red blood cells. But with hyperbaric oxygen therapy, clients breathe 100% oxygen in a chamber under greater than normal atmospheric pressure. This increases the amount of oxygen dissolved in blood plasma thereby increasing the amount of oxygen diffusing to any tissue in the body by over 200%. This oxygen-rich plasma is only achievable by breathing 100% oxygen under pressure and research have shown that 1.5 ATA (the method of measuring pressure) to 2.0 ATA is required to reach the therapeutic effects of the therapy.

When should I consider Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy?

Every health concern, illness or disease involves inflammation that, if chronic, leads to tissue damage and low oxygen levels (hypoxia). Hyperbaric oxygen significantly lowers inflammation and its associated pain as well as significantly promotes healing of the damaged tissue. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy also increases the oxygen levels to every cell in the body thus supporting the function of every system in the body. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy can be a stand-alone therapy or in conjunction with other medical or alternative therapies.

Are there any side effects?

Most clients don’t experience side effects, although some clients may have fullness or popping in their ears similar to flying in an airplane. Changes in their eyesight may also occur, most often near vision slightly improves and distant vision slightly worsens, but these changes are temporary and are restored within a few weeks of your last session.

What should I expect during the therapy?

You sit comfortably in a mono chamber (one- or two-person chamber) that has a see- through door while breathing 100% oxygen through a mask. Most clients watch tv (Netflix, prime video, Disney plus or YouTube) but you can listen to music, read, or nap as well. The therapy is relaxing and non-invasive and the client can see and talk to staff at all times. During the first 10 minutes (pressurizing the chamber) and the last 10 minutes (depressurizing the chamber) the client needs to equalize their ears (similar to flying in an airplane).

How many sessions do I need?

The number of sessions and duration of a session depends on your health concern. Although research and experience are our main driver in our recommendation every client may respond differently, and the number of sessions may vary slightly. Having a short consult to obtain the clients medical situation will best provide direction.

Do I need a doctor's referral?

Although we get referrals from doctors, we do not require a doctor’s referral to accept clients. We also work with Physiotherapists, Chiropractors, and Naturopath Doctors to best treat your health concern. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy can be a stand-alone therapy or in conjunction with other medical or alternative therapies.
